We decided to tell the kids before vacation about my upcoming surgery. I wanted them to hear it from me rather than overhearing adults talking about it.
Our family has always had open dialogue, encourages questions and we are honest. However, I had never told my children I had implants- honestly it never came up, so we never said anything.
THE CONVERSATION WITH MY 12 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER WENT AN ENTIRELY DIFFERENT DIRECTION THAN I EXPECTED.
Me: Avalynn, I’m having surgery soon. I want to explain it so you know exactly what is happening. Mommy has implants in her breasts and we think they are making me sick. I’m having them taken out.
A: Hysterical laughter
Me: Umm, do you even know what implants are?
A: Yes.
Me: how?
A: My friends and I talk about people that have them.
It is in this moment I understand she’s laughing because she realized she’s been talking about her momma.
Me: Well, do you have any questions about all this?
A: Is your butt fake too?
Well, that went better than expected.
…And for the record this butt is all mine.
Surgery is later this week. I’ll be updating quite a bit here, in my stories and also on my blog. This is a learning experience for me that I’m wanting to share with others if they are wanting to learn too.
