Did you know the term fragrance can encompass thousands of ingredients, 95% which are derived from petrochemicals. This is astounding!
Fragrance or “perfume” can be used for any number of aromatic concoctions. These concoctions can be dangerous because they may contain components that can cause irritation to the skin (allergic reaction), synthetic musks that build up in our bodies and may enhance impacts of other toxins, phthalates that are linked to hormone disruptions, and neurotoxins that are chemicals toxic to the brain.
Often companies will even state a product is unscented and when you look closely at the label, fragrance is listed. This is because the fragrance is used to neutralize or mask the scent of the base product, but it’s not a recognizable aroma so they claim it to be unscented.
Avapure uses organic essential oils to scent most products, but offers a few lotions scented with food flavor oils or organic fragrance oils. Avapure sources these few oils from a reputable wholesaler that only uses plant, fruit and vegetables to create their aromatic blends. There are no synthetics added to their products. As a formulator, it is important for me to know my suppliers. I trust this company and in good conscience use their “fragrances” in a handful of products. Their certificate of analysis check out for the ingredients I use when formulating a few lotions and lip products.
