If your skin is looking dull and drab, chances are you need to up your exfoliation game. When consulting with women about their routine, regular exfoliation seems to be a common element of skincare regimens neglected or left out completely. As we age, our natural skin cell cycle slows down, leaving dead skin cells to build up. When you have too many, they accumulate and make your complexion look dull.
Regular exfoliation is important for several reasons. Exfoliation unclogs pores, preventing acne. It helps slough off that dead skin, allowing your products to penetrate the skin deeper, providing better overall benefits from your products. The consistent sloughing allows your skin tone to be more even and bright. Lastly, it helps to boost circulation and lymphatic drainage. This allows toxins to release, promoting an overall boost in cellular health. Cell turnover is also amped up with exfoliation, promoting a glowing look. Another added benefit that we often forget about is our make-up applies much more smoothly. If that seems to be a struggle, ask yourself how long it has been since you given your skin a good, gentle scrub.
Your skin type and sensitivity would determine what products to use and at what frequency. Most people can handle exfoliating two to three times a week. Daily exfoliation should be avoided because it can strip the skin of natural oils which can lead to inflammation and irritation and even breakouts. However, for clients beginning to add exfoliation into their routine, I recommend once a week, gradually buikding up to two or three times a week.
Avapure offers several products beneficial for exfoliation. Physical exfoliants like the Ylang Ylang and Lime Scrub or the Honey and Herb Facial Scrub are fabulous to add to your routine several times a week. The Citrus Glow Gel or Creamy Cleanser is a chemical exfoliating cleanser that contains a fruit enzyme alpha hydroxy acid, which helps break down the dead skin cells . Another great option is Apple and Enzyme toner which can be used daily or added to Avapure Clay masks for added AHA benefits.
